My Own Dear Galway Bay
On St. Patrick’s 2021, NUIG Choral Society premiered the first choral arrangement of the traditional Irish song ‘My Own Dear Galway Bay’. This piece was arranged especially for the choir by Pierce Cullen and performed under the direction of Stephen Carroll. This song was chosen as it symbolises a yearning for Galway, a place the students have all grown to love and know so well, but due to the pandemic, may not get to frequent as often as they would like.
The production also marks a year since the choir has had the opportunity to sing together in person, a stark reminder of the effects this pandemic has had, but also an example of how societies can adapt and succeed despite difficulties they may face. At time of writing, the production has been viewed more than thirteen thousand times, across YouTube and Facebook, an incredible achievement for all involved.
The choir have gone from strength to strength this year, continuing to rehearse weekly, improving their technique, and producing multiple virtual videos of an extremely high standard. Not only this, but the friendships formed behind the screens, are ones which have created a really close-knit choir, one which understands that this is indeed a team effort and that there are better times ahead.
