Environmental Society

Formerly known as CCAFS, the University of Galway Environmental Society primarily acts to promote a more sustainable way of life, both on campus in University of Galway and locally.

The Environmental Society primarily acts to promote a more sustainable way of life, both on campus in University of Galway and locally. We also aim to promote and engage in local action as well as collaboration with Irish and global organisations that fall under the themes of sustainability, development, climate change agriculture and food security

The Environmental Society concerns itself with awareness raising and action around issues pertaining to Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security. The society is closely linked with the CCAFS research platform, which sees scientist, professionals, policy makers, and communities working in concert to adapt to climate change.

Climate change is the worldâ€™s biggest challenge and will impact all aspects of life on this planet. We would like to give students in NUI Galway the platform to be involved in local, and global action with regards to climate change and its associated impacts.

As a society we not only aim to focus on environmental problems themselves but also on linked issues such as capitalism, environmental racism and the protection of indigenous communities. This is why we have for example promoted the reduction of fast-fashion consumption, an industry which is very harmful economically, racially and environmentally speaking. The Environment Society seeks to inform others, give everyone a platform for their activism, and use our influence to fight against climate change.

Some of our past events and activities include beach clean ups, documentary screenings, and talks, most importantly with climate activist Saoi Oâ€™Connor who was kind enough to come and talk to our members about their activism and what work needs to be done for the environment. We also started doing monthly meetings open to all members where everyone could pitch in ideas and more generally get to chat with like-minded people about environmental issues. In the year 19/20 the society faced unprecedented growth in terms of number of active and inactive members. We hope that next year will help us grow even more in order to have an even bigger impact than we had previously. Our plans for semester 2 were cut short but the society is still running and we are planning on being a very active part of the university community starting September 2020. All new members are more than welcome!
