The NUI, Galway Chamber Orchestra is celebrating the start of its fifteenth season this September. The orchestra, which was founded by Rosina Joyce, started as a string ensemble of about 20 musicians. In 2002, violinist Hugh Kelly took over the baton and has conducted the group ever since, seeing it grow to over forty members including wind, brass and percussion players. Unlike many other university orchestras around Ireland, the chamber orchestra is not linked to a University Music Department and so relies on funding and support from the University’s Societies Office as well as the enthusiasm of its members. This semester we are working on pieces from the Carmen Suites by Bizet for our annual Christmas concert.
Rehearsals are conducted by Matthew Berrill and are held every Monday at 7.00pm, they run for an hour and a half in √Āras na Mac L√©inn, NUI, Galway. √Āras na Mac L√©inn, located next to the college bar, has recently been refurbished and contains a specially designed rehearsal space for the orchestra. Membership of the orchestra is open to everybody and new players are more than welcome to join.
